Overview & Procedure
What the treatment is and how it's performed
What it is
Lymphatic massage is a gentle, rhythmic massage that helps the body carry away fluid. It is lighter than classic massage, which works on muscles and tension.
You can choose manual lymphatic massage or lymphatic massage with a machine.
Treatment protocol
You can have single treatments or a course.
For fluid retention and heavy legs, it is often done as a course of about eight treatments, once or twice a week.
After the course, many people keep up the effect with one treatment a month.
Preparation
Drink plenty of water the day before and on the day.
Eat a light meal a couple of hours before, not right before your appointment.
Tell the therapist about health problems, operations and medicines you use.
Procedure
The appointment starts with a short talk about your wishes and any problems.
You lie on a warm treatment table.
The therapist works with light, rhythmic movements, or with a machine if you chose it.
Duration
60 minutes, or 75 minutes with a machine.
Experience & Recovery
Pain level, downtime and healing
Pain level
Lymphatic massage does not hurt. Most people find it relaxing.
Downtime
None. Light activity, such as a walk, helps the fluid move on.
Side effects
It is common to need to urinate more often in the following hours.
Some people feel a little thirsty or tired.
Aftercare
Drink plenty of water and take it easy for the rest of the day.
Avoid alcohol for the first 24-48 hours.
Expectations & Safety
Who it's for and safety information
Who this is suitable for
Heavy, swollen legs and fluid retention.
Anyone who wants a gentle, relaxing treatment.
After an operation, when your doctor has approved it.
Who this is not suitable for
Fever, acute infection or inflammation.
Skin infection in the area.
Severe heart failure, a blood clot, kidney failure or cancer without medical clearance.
If you are pregnant, tell the clinic when you book.
Important information
Lymphatic massage moves fluid, not fat. If your weight drops right after a treatment, it is because of fluid.
How much the treatment helps depends on the cause of the fluid retention and your lifestyle.
Warning signs
Contact a doctor at once if one leg becomes swollen, warm and painful, or if you become short of breath. This can be a sign of a blood clot. Also contact a doctor if you get pain that increases, numbness or swelling after the treatment.
Maintenance
Many people feel lighter straight away. The effect lasts longest when you combine the treatments with enough fluids, exercise and a varied diet.
