Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Electrodes on the skin send weak electrical impulses that can dampen the pain signals to the brain. TENS is used for many types of pain, for example in the back, neck and joints. The effect varies from person to person. TENS relieves pain, but does not treat the cause. You can learn to use a TENS device at home.

  • Can be taken as a single treatment, or as a package of five treatments.
  • Many people learn to use TENS at home after a few sessions.

  1. The practitioner goes through your pain and your health.
  2. Electrodes are attached to the skin over or near the painful area.
  3. The strength is increased until you feel a clear but comfortable tingling.
  4. You learn how you can use TENS yourself.

The treatment takes about an hour.

  • Rare: an allergic reaction to the gel or the electrodes.

  • Check for redness of the skin where the electrodes were.

No downtime.
