Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

Many people who grind or clench their teeth get pain in the jaw, the jaw joint, the head or the neck. The treatment releases tension in the chewing muscles with massage, trigger point treatment and stretching, sometimes also from inside the mouth. You learn exercises for the jaw and get advice on habits, posture, stress and sleep. Muscle-relaxing injections in the chewing muscle are a separate treatment with a doctor.

  • Usually three to six treatments, with exercises at home between visits.

  1. The practitioner goes through your symptoms, your habits and your health.
  2. The jaw, the jaw joint, the neck and the chewing muscles are examined.
  3. The muscles are treated with massage, trigger point treatment and stretching.
  4. You learn exercises and get advice for home use.

The treatment takes about an hour.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

Pressure on tight chewing muscles can feel uncomfortable. The practitioner adapts the pressure.

  • Common: tenderness in the jaw for a day.
  • Rare: a headache after the treatment.

  • Do the exercises the way you have learned them.
  • Avoid chewing gum and hard food for the first days if the jaw is tender.

No downtime. The jaw can be tender for a day.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information
