Benefits

  • Strengthens weak muscles
  • Rehabilitation and body shaping
  • Pelvic floor, abdomen, thighs, arms and face

Expected results

The muscles become gradually stronger through the course. The effect on body shape is moderate and lasts longest with regular exercise.

Overview & Procedure

What the treatment is and how it's performed

What it is

In electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), electrodes on the skin send weak electrical impulses that make the muscles contract. EMS is used in rehabilitation to build up or maintain muscle strength, for example after injury or surgery, and to train the pelvic floor. In body shaping, EMS is used to tone the muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, calves, arms and face. The effect on body shape is moderate.

  • Usually a course of 8–10 treatments, once or twice a week.
  • Rehabilitation follows a plan over several weeks.

  1. The practitioner goes through your goals and your health.
  2. Electrodes are attached to the skin over the muscles to be trained.
  3. The strength is increased gradually until the muscles contract clearly.
  4. The electrodes are removed, and you get advice on training.

The treatment takes about an hour.

Experience & Recovery

Pain level, downtime and healing

The treatment does not hurt. You feel tingling and strong contractions.

  • Common: muscle soreness.
  • Uncommon: redness of the skin under the electrodes.
  • Rare: skin irritation or small burns under the electrodes.

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Regular exercise strengthens the effect.

No downtime. You can be stiff for a day or two.

Expectations & Safety

Who it's for and safety information

  • Electrodes must never be placed on the front of the neck, over the heart or over the eyes.
  • After surgery, the treatment follows the plan from your surgeon or physiotherapist.
  • EMS does not replace regular exercise, but it can be an addition.

  • Rehabilitation after injury or surgery, when the muscles are weak.
  • A weak pelvic floor and urinary leakage, as an addition to pelvic floor exercises.
  • Anyone who wants to tone the muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, thighs or arms.

  • Anyone who wants to lose weight. EMS does not reduce fat.
  • Reduced sensation in the skin in the area.

The effect builds up through the course and is kept with exercise and maintenance.

  • A pacemaker, a defibrillator or another electronic implant.
  • Pregnancy, for treatment of the abdomen, pelvis and lower back.
  • Epilepsy.
  • A blood clot or inflamed varicose veins in the area.
  • Cancer in the area, unless a doctor has cleared you.
  • Wounds, infection or eczema where the electrodes will be placed.

Stop the treatment if you get chest pain or palpitations or feel dizzy. If you have chest pain, call 113.
